A Qualitative Evaluation of the Peer Mentoring Service at Camden VoiceAbility

What is this project?

Camden Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have asked the McPin Foundation to carry out an independent evaluation of the peer mentoring service run by Camden VoiceAbility. Peer mentoring involves a mentee setting short-term, achievable goals with a mentor, who has been through similar experiences. The mentor then offers practical and emotional support to help the mentee achieve their goals, develop skills and make progress in their personal recovery. The evaluation will be qualitative, allowing mentors and mentees to explain in-depth about their experiences of peer mentoring.

What are we doing?

We are currently analysing the data and writing up our findings in a report, which we will deliver to Camden CCG by the end of 2016. The individual interviews will involve us speaking to about eight mentors and eight mentees, by phone or in person. In the mentee interviews, we will explore how mentees came into contact with the service, their experience of having a mentor and the impact the service has had on their personal goals and recovery. In the mentor interviews, we will explore what the impact of mentoring has been for them, and their experiences of training, supervision and support. We will also speak to VoiceAbility staff involved in running the service to gain background information and to understand their perspective on it.

The information we collect will be used to produce a summary report in August and a final report in December, which will be provided to VoiceAbility and the CCG. This report will highlight the key benefits that the service has for mentors and mentees, as well as ways that it might be improved.

Why is this project important?

Peer mentoring is growing in importance as a way to help people with their recovery. The evaluation will provide an independent assessment of the Camden VoiceAbility peer mentoring programme’s strengths and areas for improvement, which may support the development of the service. The CCG may also use the findings to identify measures or scales that capture the outcomes which are important and meaningful to people who use the service. This could then be used to improve the data that is collected about the effectiveness of the service.

What is the current state of the project?

The study began in June 2016 and will run until December 2016. We are currently carrying out individual interviews with mentors and mentees.
